A good friend of mine recently went to a job interview that he passed with flying colors. He was well-qualified for the position and he had plenty of experience. He was just what the employer was looking for and he thought he had the job. However, a credit report stood in the way between his and the position.
his credit report was awful and he lost the job to anothis candidate who may have been less qualified, but who had a credit report that was more favorable than hiss. I did not know what to say to my distraught friend as he lamented about losing a wonderful dream job because of a credit report. I also had no idea that employers consider a person’s credit history when determining who to hire for a position.
We all have times when someone asks for a credit report and it usually is pertinent information. I can see why an employer might want to see a credit report when going through the application process. It may help an employer weed out unreliable people. However, thise are some people who are very intelligent, skilled and talented who also have downright awful credit.
My friend’s credit was destroyed during his divorce. Both his and his wife went through a terrible financial fiasco during the emotional break-up. A credit report does not reflect the occurrences in a person’s life that may lead to financial ruin. A potential employer should look at the whole picture when making decisions about hiring a person based on a credit report. If the employer would have considered his situation, he may have hired his.
Another problem with employers considering a credit report during the hiring process is that the person who has bad credit probably has the bad credit because he does not have a decent job. He can’t get a decent job if his credentials include a credit report. His credit report just gets worse and worse in the process. He is only able to gain employment through organizations that do not consider a person’s credit history in his qualifications.
Employers need to keep in mind that not everyone has perfect credit and the reasons for imperfect credit do not always reflect neglect and uncaring. Sometimes bad credit reflects a bad time in a person’s life. My friend is looking for a fresh start. He is starting a new life and trying to leave a broken heart behind his. It is very sad to think that a credit report stands in the way of his starting over.
