1980`s Arcade Games

1980`s arcade games are classics in every sense of the word. As the first popular and widespread arcade games, they set the stage for an industry that has since overcome the movie business in terms of dollar figures. My favorite 1980`s arcade game was always Space Invaders. Simple and yet for some reason totally addictive, Space Invaders pretty much sums up the 1980`s arcade game experience.

Just about every 1980`s arcade game is now available in one form or other to be played on your computer. While its not the same thing as the actual arcade experience, it’ll probably satisfy your 1980`s arcade game cravings and save you a whole bunch of quarters to boot.

With the right modifications, you can set up certain gaming consoles to play 1980`s arcade games as well. I had a friend rewire my Xbox, and I’m not really sure how he did it but now I’ve got just about every 1980`s arcade game I’d ever want on its hard drive. Apparently, a lot of people will use community forums to post files for free download, random things including 1980`s arcade games, and my friend just knew where to look to grab them. I’m not sure that its entirely legal, but hey, I don’t think anyone is going to be busting down my door over some 1980`s arcade games.

Of course, 1980`s arcade games are still sold legally in packages designed for either consoles or computers. Atari came out with a compilation of their greatest 1980`s arcade games a few years ago and I still see it in stores. I have to hand it to them, only videogame makers would ever be able to pull off making a profit on software that is over 20 years old. The file sizes for most 1980`s arcade games aren’t much bigger than one page word documents, and with a just a basic programming know how you could probably rewrite any 1980`s arcade game yourself with a graphing calculator.

Having said that, there is a nostalgia factor about 1980`s arcade games that makes it almost worth it to drop money on them all over again. Maybe I’m just a complete 1980`s arcade game addict, but I’m sure I’m not the only one. Either way, I’m sure I’m going to be playing Space Invaders and other games like it at least now and then for the rest of my life. If I ever have kids and if they ever put me in a nursing home, I won’t mind so long as there are some cute nurses and some 1980`s arcade games to play.
